Kyushu Jangara Ramen

Published on March 1st, 2012

Take shelter in one of the most famous noodle chains, specializing in Kyushu style ramen. Kyushu is the southernmost main island of Japan and home to their infamous creation, tonkotsu ramen.  Traditional toppings usually consist of chopped green onions, spicy cod roe, slices of pork, seaweed, and a boiled egg among others. All of this is just icing on the cake because the thin noodles bathed in the rich tonkotsu soup is what will really grab your taste bud’s attention.

The noodles here are tender, the pork well seasoned, and the broth is rich and complex. The atmosphere is playful and hip, making this a great place to hang out with friends while having a beer.

You can tell that Jangara is popular just by looking at the long queues that occupy the entrance every day. So I would recommend you try to get a head start and arrive before 11:30am. There are in fact two floors to this particular branch so be sure to go to the second floor if you want to order the large portion (oomori). With such quality food the price is a bargain at around 700 yen per bowl of tonkotsu goodness. Whatever you decide to choose from their delicious menu, you will be hard pressed to find something you won’t like.
